Sunday School Lesson By Abigail Gabriels

Highlights from the David Series #1

Looking at the life of King David and how he walked into the David covenant.

A Humble Beginning

A young forgotten boy - rose from the role of a shepherd, into Israel's greatest king and moved the heart of God into one of the most powerful covenants ever - The Davidic Covenant: “When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.” - 2 Samuel 7:13How did David earn so much favor before God? How did a shepherd melt the heart of God, finding so much favor with God which led God to call him a “man after his own heart”. Jesus Christ, God’s only son, was sent through the lineage of King David because of this covenant. Jesus was notably called “Son of David”.

Why was there a need for a new king

Now the Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go; I am sending you to Jesse the Bethlehemite. For I have provided Myself a king among his sons.” - 1 Samuel 17:1

The current leader grew prideful (When you were little in your own eyes, were you not the head of the tribes of Israel - 1 Samuel 15)

Saul did not obey the Lord.

The Qualified King

David’s had not only the matching qualification but also the right personality traits

David’s heart was humble and set right before God - He was not just fit for a king, he was fully prepared to be king

Skillful in playing  -  he was exceptional in music

a mighty man of valor - brave and courageous

Prudent in speech -  David was known as a man who put thought into his words.
